Empowerment

The initiative was introduced in 2020 and registered under the registration number: SS/KPI/WD/LR/CBO/KIK-D/290/2021 to cater for less fortunate persons in various counties along the Coast Region. GHCI (Giving Hands Community Initiative) is a non-profit organization located within Kilifi County in Kilifi South. Generally, poverty has affected most families causing them to experience havoc in their day-to-day life. Lack of employment and education, as well as unequally distribution of natural resources, are some of the factors contributing to poverty in Kenya especially in communities along the Coast.

Moreover, with the outbreak of COVID-19 in March of 2020, the Kenyan economy and employment opportunities took a very big hit. Basically, most youths along the Coast depend on the hotel industry and Export Processing Zone (EPZ) sectors as their source of employment. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic has led to the closure of hotels and other business sectors hence contributing to high unemployment rates.

With these pinpointed factors, a huge number of people along the Coast, have been left living in poverty exposing them, especially the youth, to terror and criminal activities. Therefore, to create safer environments, GHCI engages by giving support majorly to the identified poor communities. Ultimately, the organization to achieve its mandate and effective functioning needs more supports and commitment from various stakeholders.
